Letter to a Traveling Lover
(volume ii, part I)

Sorry I missed your call (again). I'd tell you all my excuses but in an effort to minimize word count (I've been known to be long-winded) let's just say sometimes I lose my phone and sometimes the dog has to go to the vet.

Things have been busy (what's new). We had a sub-committees meeting at work last week and I almost called you for input. You were probably mid-flight somewhere though. Where were you this week? I can never seem to keep track--you mentioned something about Quebec?

After a couple drinks I can see less and I always pull you closer, settling in the normal space between our breaths. I always want to touch your face when I'm that close, to pull you in towards me, to fill in those last few inches of [air] with my hand, your face, my lips, you.

I'm sorry these are the only moments this happens. That this contradicts my sober pleas for taking things slow, not answering your calls, and only being available every other visit.

But you and I both know I can only go to the grocery store with you by my side and someday, I promise, that will count for something.

Things to buy next time you're in town*:

vodka
dog food

*when again? I think I'm busy next weekend. Let me know.
